Run a safety check

Check your passwords, protection and site permissions in one go.

Safety check looks at everything that keeps you safe online and shows what needs your attention, with a way to fix each thing right there.

  1. Tap the menu button next to the address bar, then tap Settings.
  2. Tap Privacy & security, then Safety check at the top.
  3. Tap Check now. If your phone has a screen lock, you're asked to unlock it first.

What it looks at

  • Passwords: saved passwords that turned up in a known data breach, are used on more than one site, or are easy to guess. Tap one to go to your saved passwords and change it.
  • Protection: any protection that's switched off, such as ad blocking or HTTPS-Only Mode, with its switch right there.
  • Site permissions: sites still allowed your camera, microphone, location or notifications that you haven't visited in two months. Tap Remove to take that back.
  • Web engine: Android System WebView, which shows every web page. If it hasn't been updated for a while, tap it to update it from Google Play.
Your passwords are checked without being sent anywhere. Only the first five characters of a scrambled form of each one leave your phone, which isn't enough to work out the password.
