Keep downloads going in the background

Phone settings that stop big downloads being cut off.

Downloads carry on when you leave Smart Browser or turn the screen off, and their progress shows in your notifications with Pause and Cancel. But many phones save battery by stopping apps that work in the background, and that can pause or end a big download part way.

These three changes let downloads finish without interruptions. They're in your phone's own settings, not in Smart Browser.

1. Battery: no restrictions

  1. Open your phone's Settings and tap Apps, then Smart Browser.
  2. Tap Battery (on some phones App battery usage).
  3. Choose Unrestricted (on some phones No restrictions or Don't optimise).

2. Background data: allowed

  1. In the same Smart Browser app settings, tap Mobile data (on some phones Mobile data & Wi-Fi or Data usage).
  2. Turn on Background data.
  3. If you use your phone's Data Saver, also turn on Unrestricted data usage.

3. Notifications: on

Allow notifications for Smart Browser, so you can see a download's progress and pause or cancel it. On some phones this also helps the download keep running.

Phones that need one more step

  • Samsung: open Settings, Battery, Background usage limits, then Never sleeping apps, and add Smart Browser.
  • Xiaomi, Redmi and POCO: in Smart Browser's app settings, set Battery saver to No restrictions and turn on Autostart.
  • OPPO, realme and OnePlus: in Smart Browser's app settings, open Battery usage and turn on Allow background activity.
  • vivo: open Settings, Battery, Background power consumption management, and set Smart Browser to Allow.
  • Huawei and Honor: open Settings, Battery, App launch, turn off the switch for Smart Browser and leave all three options on.
Names differ a little between phones and Android versions. If you can't find one, search your phone's Settings for battery or background. The site dontkillmyapp.com has steps for most phones.
If Download over Wi-Fi only is on in Smart Browser, downloads wait while you're on mobile data. That's on purpose, not your phone stopping them.
