The Eyes Don’t Turn Without Reason

Beneath her eyes I don’t know skin
Just skin but there’s more
Like paper, left out in the rain
She wipes it but it stays
Of course it does
Wipe all you want

Hope
It’s just noise
You hear it but it’s not really there
It’s like a song with no tune
Something like that
She never quite belongs
Her feet, always off the ground but never quite in the air
She says things but do they mean anything
She looks away and no one says a word
Not a word

Things break
Quiet
Like the floor, when you step on it wrong
Doesn’t make a sound
But it does
You just don’t hear it
She held it but it wasn’t holding
Things like that they slip
Cracks
No, just air

Time it doesn’t heal
It doesn’t fix
It just makes room for whatever
Waiting doesn’t answer anything
Doesn’t even matter
But you wait anyway
The space between questions gets louder
Louder than the answers ever could

And the eyes they turn
Not on purpose but they turn
Not out of spite
Not even because they want to
There’s just nothing else
Nothing left.
